Progress update:

In 2008 YDNPA in partnership with the People's Trust for Endangered Species and Natural England reintroduced Dormice into Freeholder's Wood in Wensleydale. The latest monitoring in 2011 shows that the population is thriving and has expanded its range beyond the original release site. This is one of the most successful reintroductions in the national Dormouse Species Recovery Programme.

Following a review In 2009, the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority has adopted a species reintroduction policy. The Authority's policy sets out how it will assess any future proposals for species reintroductions or translocations within the Park. Only those that meet IUCN and JNCC guidelines, are consistent with National Park purposes, and have regard to the socio-economic well-being of local communities will be supported by the Authority.
