Progress update:
Since 2000 the National Park Authority has been carrying out surveys of priority habitats and species to determine their distribution and status. The majority of this information has now been transferred to the National Biodiversity Network via the Yorkshire & Humber Environmental Data Network. A report on the overall status and trends of habitats and species was published in 2011.

As part of the new Local Biodiversity Action Plan - Nature in the Dales 2020 Vision - the Yorkshire Dales Biodiversity Forum is co-ordinating the work of many groups and individuals to collect baseline data on new priority species. The new monitoring programme is being put in place over the next 2 years. In the meantime, the National Park Authority is continuing its annual programme of habitat surveys, which complement the surveys carried out by Natural England for SSSIs and land in agri-environment schemes.
