Progress update:
a) There have been further delays to North Yorkshire County Council's working on developing the planned Highways Design Guide. It is now anticipated that the Council will produce a draft of the guide for consultation before the end of 2011.
b) Over the past 3 years the Yorkshire Dales Road Verge Project has delivered major changes to the way road verges are managed within the Park. Through the project, which is a collaboration between the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, North Yorkshire County Council and the National Park Authority, people from 20 villages were involved in managing over 7kms of verge for biodiversity.
Cumbria County Council has a policy to cut roadside grass to ensure that people can use the roads safely, whilst taking into account environmental and conservation considerations. Each verge has been surveyed and classified according to the botanical content. The cutting times are based on these classifications, and are intended to allow the seeds to set. Some verges are cut early in the year and some later in July through to September.
