Open Access offers great opportunities to ‘get away from it all’, but it doesn’t always have to be about getting wild and windswept, or knee deep in heather or bogs.
Below is a selection of self-guided walks on Open Access land to suit most abilities. Whatever your style – from remote and rugged to a short gentle stroll – there is a walk here for you.
Simply click on the title of a walk on the map below to download a copy of the route map and directions. If you have any comments on the walk routes please email yourthoughts@yorkshiredales.org.uk.
Most of these routes include some sections on open moorland with no obvious path, so a map and navigational skills are required. The dotted routes on the maps are suggestions only – you are free to roam anywhere on Open Access land.
Exercise your Open Access rights responsibly
Look out for the Open Access symbol which tells you where you can walk, and always show respect for the environment by following the Countryside code.
Restrictions may apply on some areas of Open Access land for purposes such as preventing disturbance to breeding birds, land management or fire prevention. Please check for local restrictions before setting off. These can be found on our closures and restrictions page, by contacting one of our National Park Centres, or at www.naturalengland.org.uk.
If you feel inspired to plan your own route on Open Access land, you can find information on all existing crossing points on Access land in the Yorkshire Dales National Park on our Open Access Infrastructure Map.
