Stainforth

There’s a handsome 17th century packhorse bridge over the River Ribble at Stainforth, which indicates its former importance as a stopping point on a cross-Dales packhorse route between Lancaster, Malham, Fountains Abbey, Ripon and York. Just above Stainforth Force – a beautiful waterfall and salmon leap – the old bridge is now the location of a popular informal picnic area.

The village itself, now by-passed by the main B6479, is a peaceful spot with its charming stepping stones over the beck in the village centre. From the stepping stones Goat Scar Lane, a steep stony track leads eastwards to Catrigg Force, a beautiful waterfall on Stainforth Beck. From here there is a fine walk back to Settle via Winskill and Langcliffe Scar.

It’s a short walk by field path to the famous Hoffman Kiln, a remarkable piece of industrial archaeology linked to the early years of mechanised lime burning which is now a historic monument.

Stainforth is also on the Ribble Way, and this pretty riverside path can be followed down to Settle or up river to Helwith Bridge and Horton-in-Ribblesdale.
