The village of Buckden takes its name from a former hunting lodge in the medieval Forest of Langstrothdale.
It is now at the centre of the National Trust's Upper Wharfedale estate and there is a wide choice of magnificent walks to be enjoyed here. You could walk into Langstrothdale to Hubberholme and Yockenthwaite along the Dales Way, or back down river towards Starbotton and Kettlewell.
One very popular walk is to follow the track up the Raikes – on the line of a Roman road to Cray - with magnificent high level walks to Hubberholme and Yockenthwaite, or to the summit of Buckden Pike itself. Strong walkers can follow moorland tracks over Old Cote Moor into Littondale, to Litton and Radcliff and onwards to Kettlewell or Kilnsey, from where you could catch the bus back to Buckden.
A real connoisseurs’ walk is to use the weekend 800 bus service to travel to the summit of the Kidstone Pass en route for Bishopdale from where you can walk over the Stake Pass, an ancient green lane, dropping down to Stalling Busk and Semer Water and along the River Bain to pick up the return 800 bus at Bainbridge in Wensleydale.
