Bainbridge

Bainbridge has some fascinating historical links and traditions. The site of the old Roman fort of Virosidum is still discernible behind the village, whilst the old Hunting Horn kept in the Rose & Crown Inn is sounded at 10pm every evening from September 12 until Shrove Tuesday, as a means of guiding benighted travellers off the fells – a tradition carried over from a time when the village was part of the Plantagenet Hunting Forest of Wensleydale.

With its huge village green, complete with stocks, shady trees, and fringed by fine Georgian houses, the village has special charm.

Good bus services make it an excellent starting or finish point for a choice of walks – along the River Bain, England’s shortest river, to beautiful Semer Water, parallel with the Wensleydale Railway to Hawes or eastwards via Askrigg and Carperby to Castle Bolton, Redmire or Aysgarth.
