Celebrated for its magnificent falls, where the River Ure tumbles over great limestone steps in three glistening white water surges, Aysgarth is not to be missed when visiting the Yorkshire Dales.
Close by to the Falls is Freeholders’ Woods, an ancient coppiced woodland, which is now a nature reserve.
There are lots of beautiful walks through the woods to Carperby, West Burton and Castle Bolton and along the riverside to Askrigg and Bainbridge.
Nor should the village of Aysgarth be neglected. The old Parish Church has a magnificent rood screen which originally came from Jervaulx Abbey and the village has interesting shops and two pubs. There is also an excellent National Park Centre down by the Falls with a café celebrated for its home-made cakes.
Bus times can be checked on the Dalesbus website (link opens in new window).
Local services: accommodation, toilets, pub, shop, tourist information centre
