Why was there a need for the project?

There has been a dramatic decline in the natural distribution of Juniper within the UK since 1960. Over-grazing and direct clearance have been the main causes of decline. Consequently Juniper has been identified as a UK Biodiversity Action Plan priority species. Three large populations and a number of smaller groups remain in the Yorkshire Dales National Park (YDNP) so we have the opportunity to help reverse the decline of this species.

What are the projects aims?

  • Determine the distribution and status of the species

  • Collect seeds for ex-situ propagation

  • Encourage the good management of existing populations

  • Identify suitable sites for new colonies

  • Replant local stock within Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs)

What has the project achieved so far?

  • GIS map layer marking the distribution within the YDNP

  • Ground-truthing to identify collection sites

  • Collection of seeds since 2005 and cuttings since 2007

  • Professional propagation

  • 360 plants available for planting schemes in 2009/10

  • Experimental research regarding seed viability and climate change since 2008

  • Three restoration schemes covering 2.5 hectares including the establishment of new plants will begin in Spring 2010

Who is involved?

  • YDNPA Wildlife Conservation and Trees & Woodlands Teams

  • Shelagh McCartan, Forest Research

  • Natural England, Hansons, Tarmac and other landowners and land managers

  • Cheviot Trees

  • Ann Altringham BSc. Student
