Map:

Ordnance Survey Explorer Map OL2 - Yorkshire Dales Southern & Western areas

Description:

Lower Grass Wood is owned and managed by the Woodland Trust. It consists of 8.54 hectares of ancient semi-natural woodland which stretches along a south-western slope that leads down to the River Wharfe. Lower Grass Wood forms part of the larger woodland Grass Wood and Bastow Wood. The woodland has a similar species composition and management history to Grass Wood. The canopy layer consists of sycamore, sessile and pedunculate oak, ash, birch with occasional planted larch and beech, while the ground flora includes bluebells, dog's mercury, wild thyme, marjoram and basil. These woods are some of the best places to see and hear woodland birds in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, such as the tree pippit, wood warbler, pied flycatcher and redstart. Further information about this woodland and the Woodland Trust's on-going management plans are available on the Woodland Trust webpage provided below.

Access and facilities:

Lower Grass Wood is a short walk from the characterful village of Grassington along the River Wharfe. The wood can be entered from the public right of way that crosses the site from the riverside to Grass Wood Lane, as shown on the Ordnance Survey map mentioned above. Within the woodland there is a network of permissive paths. There is ample car parking and public transport links in Grassington at the National Park Centre where there is also a shop and toilets. In addition, there is limited car parking on Grass Wood Lane. Further information about access on this site is available on the Woodland Trust webpage provided below.
