One of the most important objectives of the Project was to raise awareness of the Natura 2000 network of European protected sites and the importance of cattle in the management of upland limestone landscapes. It has been highly successful in this.
The Project has carried out a huge range of promotional work at local, regional, national and international levels. These included onsite displays, press events, demonstration days and attendance at national and international conferences.
The Project also hosted an international Eurosite meeting in 2006 which was attended by 30 delegates from across Europe’s karst regions.
We have also carried the message more widely throughout Europe. The Project worked closely with the Burren LIFE team in Ireland with reciprocal visits and made a presentation to their conference in February 2008. The Project attended the Europarc conference in Appeldoorn, Netherlands in 2005 and was successful in winning the Eurosite Award 2005 in recognition of the Project’s contribution to European nature conservation.
As a result of successful lobbying by the Project, the new English Environmental Stewardship Scheme contains supplementary payments to encourage farmers to use traditional cattle breeds in conservation grazing. This is vital for the long-term sustainability of cattle grazing in Limestone Country.
