Limestone Country also contains two National Nature Reserves (NNR) - Malham Tarn and Ingleborough.
Malham Tarn
Malham Tarn Fen is an outstanding example of an alkaline fen habitat which was in danger of being overwhelmed by invasive scrub and meadowsweet. The Limestone Country Project funded the purchase of a small herd of Dexter cattle and a new building to provide winter housing for the National Trust's tenant farmers to enable the graxing of 6.5 hectares of the fen.

Through the Project, English Nature purchased over 50 young blue-grey cattle to establish a small herd to manage in excess of 250 hectares of Ingleborough National Nature Reserve. Paul Evans, the Ingleborough National Nature Reserve Manager for Natural England and farmer, Bill Whitaker are pictured above with some of the blue-grey cattle.
